Floating Cheesecloth Ghosts
Create eerie floating ghosts from cheesecloth and balloons to hang in a tree or doorway — a classic outdoor Halloween look that costs almost nothing.
Materials
- Cheesecloth / muslin (1–2 m)
- PVA craft glue or liquid starch (1 bottle)
- Small balloons (4–6)
- Black felt or marker (1)
- Clear fishing line (1 roll)

Step-by-Step Instructions
Shape the Head
Inflate a small balloon and rest it on top of a bottle or jar to hold it steady — this forms the ghost's head.
Mix the Stiffener
Mix equal parts PVA craft glue and water in a bowl (or use liquid starch).
Soak the Cheesecloth
Cut squares of cheesecloth and soak them in the glue mixture until saturated, then gently wring out the excess.
Drape & Dry
Drape the wet cloth over the balloon so it falls in ghostly folds. Leave to dry hard overnight.
Pop the Balloon
Once stiff, pop and remove the balloon. The cheesecloth holds its floating ghost shape.
Add Faces & Hang
Draw or glue on simple black felt eyes, then hang from tree branches or a doorway with clear fishing line so they appear to float.
Safety Notes
Hang ghosts out of walking paths so guests don't get tangled. Use battery lights only if lighting them.
Waste & Recycling Tips
Cheesecloth ghosts can be flattened and stored in a bag for reuse. Pop and bin the balloons after shaping.
