Hanging Paper Lantern Lights
String glowing paper lanterns above your party space for instant atmosphere. A simple overhead feature that transforms backyards, marquees and halls after dark.

- LED lantern bulbs or fairy lights (2–3 strings)
- Catenary wire or strong rope (10–15 m)

Step-by-Step Instructions
Plan the Layout
Decide where to run your lines — across a backyard, along a fence, or zig-zagged under a marquee roof.
Rig the Support Line
String a strong wire or catenary rope between fixed points at a safe height (about 2.4m) as the main support.
Assemble the Lanterns
Pop open each paper lantern and insert its wire expander so it holds a round shape.
Add the Lights
Clip a battery LED bulb inside each lantern, or thread a fairy-light string so one or two bulbs sit inside each.
Hang Evenly
Attach lanterns to the support line with hooks or clips, spacing them evenly and alternating sizes and colours.
Test After Dark
Switch on at dusk and adjust spacing and heights until the glow looks balanced across the space.
Safety Notes
Use LED bulbs rated for the lanterns — never hot incandescent bulbs against paper. For outdoor use, check lights are weather-rated and keep connections off the ground.
Waste & Recycling Tips
Paper lanterns fold flat for storage and reuse. Rechargeable or mains LED strings avoid battery waste.
