From home celebrations to venue parties — how to plan an engagement party that brings both families together.

An engagement party is often the first time both families and friend groups meet. It can be as simple as drinks at home or as big as a venue party.

Timing

Most couples hold the party within 2–3 months of getting engaged. Pick a date well before wedding planning gets busy.

A good rule is to only invite people you plan to invite to the wedding, so nobody feels left out later.

Home or backyard with a hired marquee

Private room at a bar or restaurant

Winery or garden venue

Fairy lights and candles

Photo board of the couple

DIY neon-style sign or balloon garland

Canapés or grazing table

A signature cocktail or mocktail named after the couple

A cake or dessert table

Keep speeches short — usually one from each family and a thank-you from the couple.

Gifts aren't expected at many engagement parties. If guests ask, a simple note saying "your presence is our present" works well.
