How to Host a Diwali Party

Light up your home for Diwali — diyas, rangoli, menu ideas, gifts and fireworks rules in NZ.

Diwali, the festival of lights, usually falls in October or November. It's a joyful time for sharing food, sweets and light with family and friends.

Decorate with light

  • Clay diyas on steps, windowsills and tables (or LED diyas for safety)
  • Fairy lights across the front of the house
  • Marigold garlands and fresh flowers

  • Rangoli

Create a rangoli at the entrance with coloured powder, rice, flower petals or chalk. Kids love helping, and stencils make it easy for beginners.

    Menu ideas

  • Samosas, pakoras and chaat
  • Paneer or dal dishes with rice and naan
  • Sweets (mithai) such as ladoo, barfi and gulab jamun
  • Masala chai

  • Gifts

Boxes of sweets, dried fruit, candles or small décor items are popular gifts for guests and neighbours.

    Fireworks in NZ

Consumer fireworks can only be sold in NZ from 2 to 5 November, and only to people 18 and over. If Diwali falls outside those dates, plan ahead or look for a public fireworks display. Always check local fire restrictions.

    Community events

Many cities host free Diwali festivals with food stalls, dance and music — a great way to celebrate with the wider community.
