New Year's Eve in NZ is a summer event — think barbecues, backyards, beaches and baches. Here's how to plan one that runs smoothly until midnight and beyond.

Book early

DJs, hire companies and caterers get busy from November. If you need a marquee, extra chairs or a portable toilet, book at least 2–3 months ahead.

Food

Barbecue for the early crowd

Grazing platters that can sit out (keep in the shade)

Midnight snack — pizza, sliders or late-night toasties

Drinks

Plenty of water and non-alcoholic options

Ice — more than you think (roughly 1kg per guest)

A drinks station away from the food to spread people out

Lighting and music

Festoon lights, lanterns and solar path lights

A countdown playlist and a visible clock

Fireworks and fire safety

Consumer fireworks in NZ can only be sold for a few days before Guy Fawkes (5 November), and many areas have fire restrictions in summer. Check fire bans on the Fire and Emergency NZ website before lighting anything — or use sparklers and glow sticks instead.

Getting home safe

Arrange sober drivers, book shuttles or taxis early, or offer spare beds and tent space.
