How to Plan a Celebration of Life

How to Plan a Celebration of Life

Gentle, practical guidance for planning a memorial or celebration of life — venue, tributes, catering and support.

Planning a memorial while grieving is hard. This guide breaks it into manageable steps. Lean on family and friends and share tasks.

Start with their wishes

Consider what your loved one wanted, and any cultural, faith or tikanga practices important to the family. A funeral director, celebrant or kaumātua can guide you.

Venue

  • Church, marae, community hall or funeral home chapel
  • A place that meant something to them — a sports club, garden, beach or family home
  • Check capacity, parking and accessibility for older guests

  • Tributes

  • Photo slideshow or memory board
  • Favourite music or songs
  • Eulogies from 2–4 people (about 3–5 minutes each)
  • A memory book or cards for guests to write in

  • Catering

Light refreshments after the service are common — sandwiches, scones, slices, tea and coffee. Many community groups and caterers offer simple packages.

    Share the load

Ask someone to be the point of contact for guests, someone to manage the slideshow, and someone to handle catering on the day.

    Support

Grief support is available in NZ through services such as Skylight and your GP. You don't have to do this alone.
